The Simple Steps to Becoming 91³ÉÈËÊÓƵ

To be eligible for degree candidacy, applicants must meet all of the requirements for admission to the Graduate School. Please note: Admission to the program is competitive. Meeting the Graduate School requirements does not ensure admission into the Special Education MS program. Applications are accepted any time. However, applicants for graduate assistantships and other forms of financial aid must complete their file by March 1st to ensure full consideration.

Apply to the Graduate School

All students can apply to the graduate school through My91³ÉÈËÊÓƵ. The graduate school requires:

  1. A complete online application
  2. A copy of your official transcripts
  3. A $30 application fee

Apply to the Program

Application to the Program is also completed through My91³ÉÈËÊÓƵ.

Materials that will need to uploaded to complete the application process include:

  • Current resume or vita
  • Statement of professional goals that is a minimum of one paragraph in length. This should outline your previous experiences as well as your reasons and purpose for seeking an MS in Special Education at 91³ÉÈËÊÓƵ
  • Verification of special education licensure or endorsement (in IL, a screenshot of one's ELIS page can be used; other states provide verification in different ways)
  • The names and contact information of two people who can serve as professional references

Apply for an Assistantship

If you are interested in a graduate assistantship, you also need to submit a graduate assistantship application.

Graduate assistantships are typically awarded in accordance with the academic year. Assistantship applications are normally accepted through the middle of February; a decision for the next academic year comes within a month. For more information about graduate assistantships, please click here.

Program Admission Requirements

    1. Degree requirements for all candidates include those outlined for the master's degree by the Graduate School Catalog.
    2. Candidates must complete a minimum of 32 semester hours in the thesis option and 36 semester hours in the non-thesis option.
    3. All candidates must complete a research and issues course.
    4. Eight semester hours of professional graduate level courses in education (such as Curriculum Development, Social Foundations od Education, Philosophy of Education, History of Educational Thought, Comparative and International Education) are required.

    The Master of Science in Education, Special Education is flexible and allows you to select graduate-level coursework that will meet your interests and educational goals. Coursework for LBSII licensure in Behavior Intervention and Curriculum Adaption is also available on a rotating basis.

    Qualifications for Assistantship

    1. Full-time Graduate Student
    2. Available to work 18 hours per week
    3. Strong organization, time-management skills
    4. Preferred experience with project management and/or data analysis including experience using SPSS

    Review of applicants will begin March 1 and continue until positions(s) are filled
